RECIPIENTS OF GRANTS IN SUPPORT
​OF SOCIAL JUSTICE LEARNING


2014-2015

​Be Just                                                                                           ​                                        St. Mary's School, Medicine Hat
Using the Aspen Foundation grant, the group held a social justice fair.  They also visited the Medicine Hat Food Bank and a local farm to learn about ethical production and consumption.

Student Voice:
"Those lessons and experiences have taught me great things that I will live with and remember for my life.  Also the project was a great way and a different way to learn about serious global issues and how they are mostly preventable." 

Support One Senior                                                                                                            Evergreen Catholic Outreach School, Spruce Grove
The Aspen Foundation grant was used to connect seniors in a local lodge with youth.

Student Voice:
"It gives me more insight into the assisted living situation.  I have a new respect for health care workers and patients in our community." 

We R Me 2 We                                                                                                                      Ecole GH Primeau Middle School, Morinville
The Aspen Foundation grant was used to connect seniors in a local lodge with youth.

Student Voice:
"They learned that social justice is more than rolling coins and promoting fund raising. They learned that researching places and issues is important."      

Backpacks for Homeless                                                                                                  St. Pius X ElementarySchool, Edmonton
The grant was used to purchase backpack supplies to be delivered to homeless in downtown Edmonton and to do a presentation concerning their experience for the school.

Student Voice:
"No matter what people look like or do to get themselves in their position, you always have to treat them with dignity and respect that you would show your friends and family." 

"I felt we made a difference."

Recycle Awareness                                                                                                              Ascension of Our Lord School, Calgary
Using the Aspen Foundation grant, books and recycling materials were purchased to begin a recycling program in the school.

Medicine Wheel and Hoop Dance                                                                                  Mount View School, Calgary
The Aspen grant was used by the students to make a hoop under the instruction of Teddy Anderson and to learn about the medicine wheel.

Student Voice:
"We learned about different cultures and working together and bringing peace into the world.  Instead of fighting there will be more friendship and not so much war.  It has helped me to get along with more people."   

We are all Treaty 7 signatories!                                                                                       St. Michael School, Calgary
The Aspen grant was used purchase sagebrush as part of a project to build an outdoor classroom and connect students to the land and to Treaty 7.

Student Voice:
"Also, I have a better understanding of First Nation's people as our partners in building Canada and in the future of Canada." 

Eastglen Social Justice Team                                                                                          Eastglen High School, Edmonton
The Aspen Foundation grant was used to initiate and develop the Eastglen Social Justice Team including a social justice conference.

Student Voice:
"Throughout my time in Eastglen's Social Justice Team I've learned many valuable skills including networking with other members of the social justice community and the confidence to address my community about issues that affect us all.  Our Social Justice team participates in many conferences and other social justice related events which have really opened up my eyes on the ways that I as an individual can create positive change in my community." 

Cooking Up Kindness                                                                                                         St. Damien School, Calgary
The grant was used to purchase food and containers for students to plan, prepare and deliver meals to families experiencing hardship.

Student Voice:
"The lasagna was for the sick people that need food and the one's that are sick, passed away or had an operation.  We did this to show care and respect!" 

​Weaving the Change                                                                                                          Central Middle School, Red Deer
Using the Aspen Foundation grant, a program of activities that included anti-bullying, volunteering off campus, girl power through mentorship and connecting with seniors.

Student Voice:
"I really liked volunteering at Loaves and Fishes and helping the homeless."

"I really think that the focus on girls empowerment has made a huge difference for me."
